Tips: The eastern side of the area is easily reached along the Soldier Meadows road about 30 miles northeast of Gerlach. Mormon Dan and Petrified Canyons as well as numerous side canyons are accessible from this road.

A riot of color, this multi-hued mountain range was aptly named the Calico Mountains Wilderness. Mormon Dan and Petrified Canyons are striking examples of the colorful rock formations that abound within the range. The Wilderness is about 17 miles long and 7 miles wide with elevations ranging from 3,950 to about 8,000 feet.
This wilderness is a component of the Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands.
Wildlife: American Badger, Northern Pocket Gopher, Burrowing Owl, American Kestrel, Prairie Falcon, Golden Eagle, Pygmy Short-horned lizard, Western Fence Lizard, Desert Wood Rat, Northern Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk, Black-tailed Jackrabbit
