Friends of Nevada Wilderness wants you to be empowered to write your own letters to the editor on issues you care about, and we will from time to time remind you of important opportunities to speak up for wilderness. The Letter to the Editor, or LTE, is one of the most powerful tools we have for communicating with decision makers. Some of us may be completely new to the process of writing letters to the editor, and others may be old hands. For all of us, here is a short list of things to remember when you write a letter to the editor!
- Know the rules. Most newspapers have a strict word limit (typically 200-250 words), require your name, address, and telephone number, and will not publish more than 1 letter from the same author per month or two.
- Be clear. Pick one thing you want to get across and stick to it. When possible, include your main point in the first sentence.
- Be timely. When possible, relate your letter to a recent article in the paper (include the title of the piece and the date of publication). If there hasn’t been a recent article, briefly describe the current event/issue that is causing you to write your letter now and should convince the paper to publish it quickly.
- Offer an action. What change do you want your letter to cause? Do you want a decision maker to vote a certain way? Are you trying to get more people in your community to take action; and if so what specifically would you like the readers of your letter to do?
- Be personal. Facts are good, but only when we understand why they matter. Describe who you are and why you care. These details make deeper impact on our readers than we give them credit for!
