Wild Speaker Series

Protecting Mt. Charleston's Unique Butterflies

Friends of Nevada Wilderness invites you to our June Wild Speaker Series. Our presenter will be Christina Carlton of the Great Basin Institute. Christina will give us a live look into what the Great Basin Institute team has been doing on the ground to monitor butterflies in the Spring Mountains. Their research mainly focuses on the Mt. Charleston Blue Butterfly, the Spring Mountains dark blue (two sub-species), Spring Mountains Acastus Checkerspot, and the Morand's Checkerspot butterflies. Most of these species are endangered (Mt. Charleston Blue Butterfly) or sensitive species found only here in southern Nevada in the Spring Mountains.  Come find out what you can do to increase the chance of survival for these unique butterfly species. This will be an informative presentation you won't want to miss!

Christina Carlton is an education outreach technician with the Great Basin Institute. The Great Basin Institute is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and conservation throughout the West. The Institute advances ecological literacy and habitat restoration through educational outreach and direct service programs.

We will see you there!

Every first Thursday of the month, Friends of Nevada Wilderness hosted a local environmental expert at REI Boca Park in their Community Room. This is a great event for folks who are interested in the outdoors to learn more about hikes, local habitat, and ways to get involved with conservation efforts.

For the time being, the Wild Speaker Series has moved online 💻

The Call opens at 6:45 giving you enough time to settle in before the presentation begins at 7 pm sharp.

Please join us online every first Thursday for a new speaker every month!

**UPDATE**

The Wild Speaker Series will go online during the COVID-19 Pandemic for the safety of our staff and supporters. Please join us on Zoom for an online interactive experience. We will return to REI - Boca Park when their stores open in the near future.
