Fowl Claims: A Screening and Discussion on Public Lands
Join Friends for our December Wild Speaker Series, “Fowl Claims: A Screening and Discussion on Public Lands” online in a Zoom presentation. Fred Bell, documentary filmmaker and nature recordist, will be our presenter as we learn about his latest project release, Fowl Claims. Fowl Claims follows Jim Boone, a scientist on a mission to save birds from dying in mining claim markers. For years, prospectors staked their claims with hollow pipes, which inadvertently became bird traps. Thousands of these murderous pipes are scattered across Nevada’s landscape. Now, Jim Boone is on a mission to knock down every remaining marker and save thousands of birds from certain death. The presentation will feature the 12-minute film as an icebreaker for our chat. In addition to the documentary film, Mr. Bell will provide us an update of his projects in film and nature recordings. This will be an entertaining event you will not want to miss!
Fred Bell spends a lot of his free time quietly sitting and recording the natural sounds of the desert, especially throughout the Amargosa River basin. It’s a peaceful diversion from his full-time duties operating the video system for the Blue Man Group show in Las Vegas, which has been halted in the times of the pandemic. Seeking a new use for his recordings, he dusted off old skills of making documentaries in hopes that short films will contribute to conservation efforts in the southwest. He has completed documentaries on the Amargosa River and Jim Boone's mining marker project so far. Using art for activism is Fred's way of giving back to the natural world he loves so much.
We will see you there!
