Wild Speaker Series

Celebrating 30 Years of Red Rock Canyon NCA

Join Friends for our November Wild Speaker Series, “Celebrating 30 Years of Red Rock Canyon NCA”, online in a Zoom presentation. Erin McDermott, Executive Director of Friends of Red Rock Canyon, will share a brief history of Red Rock Canyon and discuss Friends of Red Rock Canyon's (FORRC) work to preserve, protect, and enrich our backyard sandstone treasure. Celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2019, FORRC mobilizes and supports over 300 volunteers annually. Volunteers perform trail maintenance, Canyon cleanup, graffiti removal, staffing the Visitor Center’s information desk, documenting, protecting and monitoring wildlife, removing invasive species, building fences, repairing boardwalks, striping parking lots, painting outdoor fixtures and furniture, and preserving and maintaining Native American cultural sites. In addition, FORRC supports and manages youth-focused programming including the Outdoor Adventures program and Title I school field trips to RRC. Its members donate on average an impressive 22,000 hours of their time and talents to RRC annually -- the equivalent of 13 full-time employees and valued at more than $500,000. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area turns 30 years old this November and has a rich and robust history.

Erin J. McDermott is the Friends of Red Rock Canyon Executive Director. She began her career in the non-profit sector a decade ago. Prior to joining Friends of Red Rock Canyon, Erin was Director of Lending Partnerships with Accion, a global non-profit committed to inclusive small business financing. Erin is a member of the Impact Las Vegas Foundation, Inc., was a 2016-17 Curator of the World Economic Forum Global Shapers LV, and in 2016 was named the American Business Women’s Association Millennial Woman of the Year. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in political science from Saint Mary’s College of Maryland and recently completed a master’s degree in urban leadership at University of Las Vegas, Nevada. In her spare time, Erin enjoys exploring Nevada on foot and by bike with her park ranger husband.
