Volunteer Trail Crew #1 - Arc Dome Wilderness

Join our Volunteer Trail Crew!

This year, Friends of Nevada Wilderness is offering the opportunity to be a part of our professional trails program as a volunteer! We are hosting six volunteer trail crew hitches in multiple locations around northern Nevada. Join us for just one or all of them! Friends of Nevada Wilderness will provide all of the training, safety equipment, and trail maintenance tools.

The first four volunteer trail crew hitches will take place in Arc Dome Wilderness, in central Nevada. We are restoring numerous trails including the North and South Twin Trails (which can be hiked as a loop or used to access the deeper portions of Arc Dome Wilderness, including the summits of Toiyabe Dome Arc Dome itself), the Jett Canyon Trail (towards the Southeast corner of the Wilderness), and possibly others. The trails of Arc Dome go through beautiful canyons and meadows filled with creeks, Aspens, pine trees, and rugged rock outcroppings.

Volunteer trail maintenance is hard work, but it is also very rewarding and lots of fun. You will leave these projects with a sense of accomplishment, some new skills, and hopefully some new friends! So please, read the info below and RSVP today!

Information:

Difficulty: These projects are some of the most strenuous we offer and may not be appropriate for everyone. They require the ability to hike 10 miles a day with a heavy pack, work with tools, sometimes move heavy objects. Having said that, feel free to reach out to us and discuss the difficulty of the project if you have any concerns. There are many roles in trail maintenance and we can usually find ones appropriate to meet everyone's level.

Dates: June 18-25. Unlike our typical projects, this one runs from Friday (6/18) through Friday (6/25). We will be leaving Reno Friday mid-day and starting work on Saturday, the following Friday we will not be working but returning to Reno. Volunteers are welcome to join us for however many of these days as they wish. It would be great if you could do the whole hitch, but we understand if your schedule does not allow this and we would love to see you out there for any amount of time you can offer! When the project date gets closer, we'll reach out to those who have RSVP'd and discuss this further.

Food: For this project, yes! we will be offering some group meals. We are planning to do a big group dinner on Saturday night and a Taco Tuesday dinner on Tuesday. Volunteers are expected to provide their own lunches, snacks, and breakfast. We will be providing coffee every morning!

Driving: At this time, FNW is not offering rides in our vehicles due to COVID safety concerns. For this project, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is not required to reach the campsite, but, we will let you know if that changes.

Specific Details: Details such as exact camping location, daily schedule, and weather-related factors will be provided to those who have RSVP'd on a date much closer to the project date. Plans are subject to change. We will always give as much notice as possible when this happens.

Contact Info: Please email or call Kurt Kuznicki with any questions or for further details. He can be reached at [email protected] and our office phone number: 775-324-7667.
