Visitor Gateway Trail Maintenance and Conservation Hike!

Learn about trail maintenance and conservation efforts in the Spring Mountains!

Join Friends and Litter Free LV as we work to maintain the trails located behind the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway (SMVG) and clean litter left behind by previous visitors. Come learn about how trails are maintained, why trail designs protect habitat and what you can do to prevent trail damage while completing a worthwhile project that will beautify the first stop for many recreationists who visit Mt. Charleston, the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway.

For this project, we’ll meet in the parking lot of the SMVG at 8:00 AM. Trailwork will consist of using pick-mattocks, shovels and mcleods to cut and level trail tread where water has washed out a portion of the trail. We will also collect trash and remove overgrown brush along the trail. Lace up your boots and join us!

Difficulty Level: Moderate - This project involves about 1-2 miles of hiking, at an elevation of 7,500ft, while carrying tools and all of your gear for the day.  Participants need to be of a moderate general fitness level to move at a pace that will allow he/she to complete trailwork with relative ease. Participants should have some experience in the outdoors but this is not required.

About the Trail -  The Pack Rat Trail is a loop trail (1.4 miles total) behind the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway. The trail descends gradually into Kyle Canyon Wash, goes out across the bottom of the wash, climbs steeply to run beneath the cliffs that can be seen across the canyon, drops steeply, and returns to the visitor center. This trail is both paved and unpaved.

About the Trailwork - This project doesn’t require any prior trailwork experience.  You’ll receive a safety and training session before working, including proper techniques and tool use. We will work with tools to fix a washout along the Pack Rat Trail where the trail crosses Kyle Canyon Wash. We will also pick up trash in the area and remove overgrown brush.

What You'll Need - Sturdy closed-toe shoes and long pants are required for this project. You’ll need a day pack and the capacity to carry about 2 liters of water, snacks and a lunch (we should be wrapping up around noon). You're responsible for your own transportation to and from the trail.

What We'll Have - We'll provide tools, gloves, trash bags and hard hats. We'll also have  ice cold water to refill your containers.

See you there!
