Northern Nevada Citizen Spring Inventory Trips

September 27th - 28th

Join other Citizen Spring Inventory (CSI) volunteers as we travel into different parts of the BLM Winnemucca District. we will survey springs in the South Jackson Mountains Wilderness and return home MondayThis trip will be in conjunction with the National Public Lands Day celebration at Trego Hot Springs.  Although they are among the most biologically and culturally important and highly threatened ecosystems on Earth, springs are poorly studied and inadequately protected. Though relatively small in comparison to lakes and oceans, springs support 20% of the endangered species in the United States. Through the evaluation of the data CSI volunteers collect, the health of springs and the underlying aquifers that feed them can be determined.  Pristine springs could be designated reference springs and impaired springs will be candidates for improved management or rehabilitation.  Resources permitting, your data and recommendations could lead to spring improvements such as removal of invasive species, restricted livestock grazing, and construction such as exclosures or unobstruction or diversion of spring discharge.  Experienced volunteers will train new CSI volunteers and provide survey equipment.  Please be prepared for primitive camping (unless you have an RV) and long distance hiking in rugged terrain.  Please RSVP ASAP because transportation space and survey equipment are limited. Call with questions or to RSVP to Mike at 775-473-2902 or Dorothy at 775-323-4835 or email [email protected] or [email protected].
