Overnight Stewardship on Mt. Charleston: An Authentic Trail Crew Experience
If you are ever hiking on a trail and you notice rock stairs or a trail sign has been installed to guide you to an isolated peak, it is highly likely you are benefiting from the work of a Trail Crew. Trail Crews work in remote regions for a week or more straight backpacking with their supplies and tools. Along their way, they restore, install, and remove brush and hazardous debris, among other duties, to keep visitors safe and on trail. Trail Crews love the outdoors and are knowledgeable of Wilderness rules and federal land management guidelines. If the Trail Crew life sounds like something you would like to experience, we have some good news for you!
This summer we are excited to offer a unique volunteer opportunity. Join the Friends of Nevada Wilderness on overnight stewardship events as we work to re-open the Griffith Peak trail. We will camp out high on the mountain while completing much needed trail maintenance in back-country and Wilderness areas. Like an Authentic Trail Crew, we will camp for several nights and continue our work each morning. If you are joining us, please remember to bring water and snacks along with your lunch (optional). In the evening, delicious meals will be prepared by our camp chef.
At the beginning of each day after camping, Friends will provide an oatmeal bar with coffee and tea. There will also be items available to create a sack lunch for you to enjoy on the trail. You are more than welcome to bring your own lunch and/or dinner. There is no charge to join these events, but remember, space is limited. Volunteer slots will always be filled on a first come first served basis. For trailwork, we accept volunteers that are 18 years of age or older. To sign up, please fill out our questionnaire below and RSVP for the event you would like to attend. For your safety, all volunteers on Griffith Peak Trail Rebuild Parts 3, 4, and 5 will have their gear packed to our basecamp. We look forward to you joining our Summer Volunteer Trail Crew!
