In honor of Latino Conservation Week, Stewardship Coordinator Meg Tait shares why she's passionate about protecting and caring for Nevada's wild places:
Having grown up in Argentina I learned to love the outdoors. Not that we were adventurous in the mountains or backpacking family like most people think outdoorsy people would be. But it was a different kind of outdoorsy. We would go to someone's Campo (farm) and ride horses for hours, eat dinner with the sunset, and sit around the fire under the stars. We would spend every minute at the beach that we could during the one week a year we would go to the coast. It was slowing down and sitting in the hammock just enjoying being outside in the breeze.
I brought this feeling with me when moving out to Nevada. I enjoy every creek I cross and try to jump in every lake I can, because water in the desert is something special. It’s enjoying the colors of wildflowers, and staying up way too late to witness the darkest skies I’ve ever seen.
This feeling of appreciation and finding the little joys in being outdoors is what I try to share with the volunteers we take on Stewardship trips. It’s sharing this experience, the small things like the smell of Christmas trees in July, the sound of the creek, and the first glimpse of a star, that I’d like everyone to witness. It’s why #advocacyafuera is so important. We want to create advocates for Nevada, for the beautiful public lands, and for that we want to bring people outside.

Habiendo crecido en Argentina, aprendí a amar la naturaleza. No éramos una familia aventurera o mochilera. Pero disfrutamos de estar afuera de otra manera. Íbamos al Campo de algún conocido y andábamos a caballo durante horas, cenábamos con el atardecer y nos sentábamos alrededor del fogón bajo las estrellas. Pasábamos cada minuto que podíamos en el mar cuando íbamos a la costa. Nos acostabamos tranquilos en la hamaca, simplemente disfrutando de estar afuera con el viento.
Traje este sentimiento conmigo cuando me mudé a Nevada. Disfruto cada arroyo que cruzó y trato de meterme en cada lago que puedo, porque el agua en el desierto es algo especial. Es disfrutar de los colores de las flores silvestres y quedarse despierto hasta muy tarde para observar los cielos más oscuros que he visto en mi vida.
Este sentimiento de encontrar las pequeñas alegrías de estar al aire libre es lo que trato de compartir con los voluntarios que llevamos a los viajes de Stewardship. Es compartir esta experiencia, las pequeñas cosas como el olor de Navidad en julio, el sonido del arroyo y la primera luz de una estrella, que me gustaría que todos puedan encontrar. Es por eso que #advocacyafuera es tan importante. Queremos crear defensores de Nevada, de las hermosas tierras públicas, y ayudarlos a encontrar estos pequeños detalles en la naturaleza.
