Friends Celebrates Hispanic/Latino Heritage

September 19, 2024 - Friends of Nevada Wilderness is inviting Latino families and outdoor enthusiasts to three bilingual events in Northern and Southern Nevada to celebrate Latino Conservation Week and Hispanic Heritage Month.

On Saturday, September 21, from 9 am – 12 pm, Friends bilingual Stewardship Coordinator Meg Tait will lead Reno-area Latino outdoor enthusiasts on an easy 2-mile hike starting at the Hunter Creek Trailhead in southwest Reno. This will be family-friendly hike on one of the area’s most beautiful and popular trails. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

On October 5, Meg will lead volunteers into the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area in Southern Nevada where they will spend a few hours from 8 am – 2 pm working to maintain and improve sites in the popular getaway area. The project will give local Hispanic/Latino residents a chance to enjoy the beautiful landscape close to Las Vegas and the company of their Spanish speaking neighbors, and at the same time help steward the public lands available to us all.

The project is suitable for a wide range of physical abilities. It’s great for individuals new to volunteer conservation work and is appropriate for children over 12 years old with a parent or guardian. Participants are asked to wear long pants and sleeves and sturdy shoes.

The following day, October 6, Meg will lead a pleasure hike on the Fletcher Canyon Trail on Mt. Charleston. The easy, two-mile round trip hike will take place from 9 am – 12 pm.  This event is for family members of all ages. Participants will meet at 9 am at Acastus Trail:  NV-157, Mt Charleston, NV 89124.

Esta hermosa área a las afueras de Las Vegas esta lleno de flores silvestres y mucha sombra de los pinos.

For both events, participants are asked to bring plenty of water and snacks, hats and sunscreen.

All events will include discussion of the values of conservation and the basics of Leave No Trace behind. Friends will also distribute informative “What is Wilderness” handouts in English and Spanish in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the federal Wilderness Act.

“I’m really looking forward to helping give area Latino families a safe and fun way to experience the great outdoors,” Meg said in advance of the events. “We’re lucky to have such beautiful natural areas close to where we live and I hope a lot of families will join us for these opportunities to get out and enjoy them.”

Interested folks are urged to RSVP at nevadawilderness.org/volunteer. An email with more details will be sent to everyone in the days before the events. Friends encourages Spanish-speaking residents to help spread the word - disfrutado y conservando nuestra tierra - to enjoy and protect out earth!

These events are made possible with generous support from the National Forest Foundation, Wilburforce Foundation, and the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance.

Latino Conservation Week is observed nation-wide with hikes, camping trips, and stewardship projects. An initiative of the Hispanic Access Foundation, Latino Conservation Week was created to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latinx community. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is all about respecting and honoring Hispanic people and Hispanic Americans contributions to America and to the US.
