-----Our first "First Creek and Beaks" filled up so quickly that we've planned another one that weekend! RSVP to secure your spot!-----
Here in southern Nevada, springs are often the only reliable source of water for our wildlife. Birds visit from miles around and even stop at the local springs on continental migrations. That makes springs a great spot to watch for all types of birds, from hummingbirds to songbirds to raptors!
We're teaming up with the Red Rock Audubon on February 27th to learn more about birds at springs! We'll hike about a mile and a half to First Creek, a beautiful spring at the foot of the escarpment in Red Rock. This spring has lots of exposed groundwater and many trees and shrubs that are excellent bird habitat. This is a great event for people interested in learning more about our feathered friends and experienced birders alike. We'll also get an opportunity to learn and practice spring monitoring techniques, take a nice winter hike, meet more cool springs volunteers, and enjoy this awesome spring!
This training is open to anyone who has watched the virtual springs monitoring training and wants to learn more or get some hands on practice! (Missed the virtual training? No problem--email [email protected] and we'll get you the recording.)
What to expect: We'll hike about 3 miles roundtrip to the spring from the First Creek Trailhead on a mostly flat trail with a few scrambly or loose sections. Then, we'll spend a couple hours practicing spring surveying techniques and learning birding at a cool spring! You'll get your hands a little wet and dirty trying out the equipment. We'll have extra water, snacks, and all the materials you need for spring surveying.
What to bring: sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), comfortable clothing for being outside, shoes or hiking boots suitable for walking on a trail, and water and snacks. If you have binoculars, bring them so you can get a better look at the birds!
More info will be sent in advance of the event to all RSVP's.
Space is limited, so register now! If the event is full, email [email protected] to join the waitlist or to get first dibs on the next in-person training (more coming next month!).
