Help Protect Vital Water Resources!

Come along for a rewarding adventure in the vast and rugged Desert National Wildlife Refuge! Friends of Nevada Wilderness is seeking experienced hikers to help us monitor remote freshwater springs—critical habitats for wildlife from the tiny spring snail to the iconic desert bighorn sheep.
This work builds on spring monitoring work that FNW has collected throughout Clark County since 2017. Your participation helps us continue this legacy, giving land managers the data that they need to understand how drought and climate change are impacting desert ecosystems. Springs may seem small, but they support an incredible range of biodiversity in one of the driest regions of the country.
Join us for a fun and rewarding day outside, giving back to your public lands! You can check out past photos of springs monitoring here!
Difficulty: Challenging - See our difficulty rating scale here. This project is suitable for individuals in good physical condition who participate in a regular exercise routine. This project may be physically challenging to some people; participants need to be in good physical condition and aware of their physical abilities and limits before joining this project. We'll be hiking to two separate spring sites in close proximity to one another. The surface is uneven, rocky, and loose in places, with an elevation gain of roughly 850 ft.
What to wear/bring: Long pants, and sturdy closed-toe hiking boots. A small day pack to carry food/snacks/water/sunscreen/anything else you may need (like a hat, rain jacket, sunglasses, etc.). Please bring snacks and lunch, and the ability to carry at least 3 - 4 liters of water. FNW will provide the monitoring equipment and all necessary training.
Date/Time: Sunday, September 21st, @ Corn Creek Visitor Center, 8 am - until early evening. Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and get situated.
Location/Driving: We'll meet at the Corn Creek Visitor Center at 8 am, then drive to the beginning of the hike. Folks are welcome to carpool in the FNW truck or caravan with us. The road out to the site is rough; a high clearance 4x4 or AWD vehicle is required to get to the site.
Further Details: You can check the weather forecast here. The Desert NWR can be hot in September. Please check the weather and plan accordingly. Project specifics will be sent to RSVPs closer to the date.
