Help Protect Vital Water Resources!
Head into the heart of the Mojave Desert with Friends of Nevada Wilderness for a springs monitoring project, in the vast and remote Desert National Wildlife Refuge. We need seasoned hikers to help monitor and assess freshwater springs in the Desert NWR. Freshwater springs play a key role in maintaining the delicate balance of desert ecosystems. They provide a source of fresh water for many species that live on the refuge, including the desert bighorn sheep!
This work builds on spring monitoring work that FNW has collected throughout Clark County since 2017. Your participation helps us continue this legacy by giving land managers the data they need to understand how drought and climate change are impacting desert ecosystems. Springs may seem small, but they support an incredible range of biodiversity in one of the driest regions of the country.

Difficulty: Moderate - See our difficulty rating scale here This project is suitable for individuals in good physical condition who participate in a semi-exercise routine. Most people who are physically active can participate at this level. We'll be hiking off-trail, into a canyon, and up a steep but short incline. The terrain will be uneven and rocky, with an elevation gain of around 300 ft.
What to wear/bring: Long pants, and sturdy closed-toe hiking boots. A small day pack to carry food/snacks/water/sunscreen/anything else you may need (like a hat, rain jacket, sunglasses, etc.). Please bring snacks and lunch, and the ability to carry at least 3 - 4 liters of water. FNW will provide the monitoring equipment and all necessary training.
Date/Time: Saturday, September 20th, @ Corn Creek Visitor Center, 8 am - until early evening. Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and get situated.
Location/Driving: We'll meet at the Corn Creek Visitor Center at 8 am, then drive to the beginning of the hike. Folks are welcome to carpool in the FNW truck or caravan with us. The road out to the site is rough; a high clearance 4x4 or AWD vehicle is required to get to the site.
