Come celebrate National Migratory Bird Day with the springs team and the Red Rock Audubon! Here in southern Nevada, springs are often the only reliable source of water for our wildlife, so birds visit from miles around and even stop at the local springs on continental migrations. That makes springs a great spot to watch for all types of birds, from hummingbirds to songbirds to raptors!
We'll meet at Mountain Springs, a large springs complex with great wildlife habitat, on May 14th for a morning of birding and spring surveying. This is a great event for people interested in learning more about our feathered friends and experienced birders alike. We'll also get an opportunity to learn and practice spring monitoring techniques, meet more cool springs volunteers, and enjoy this beautiful springs complex!
This training is open to anyone who has watched the virtual springs monitoring training and wants to learn more or get some hands on practice! (Missed the virtual training? No problem--email [email protected] and we'll get you the recording.)
What to expect: A few hours of practicing spring surveying techniques and learning birding at a cool spring complex! You'll get your hands a little wet and dirty trying out the equipment. Mountain springs is about 45 minutes from Las Vegas and reachable via a short dirt road off of Route 160 that is passable in any vehicle. You'll be able to park along the road right before the spring and walk less than 10 minutes to the training site (Friends staff will help direct you). We'll have extra water, snacks, and all the materials you need for spring surveying. You will be able to leave early if necessary.
What to bring: sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), comfortable clothing and shoes for being outside, water and snacks, and an outdoor chair if desired. If you have binoculars, bring them so you can get a better look at the birds!
