Camping

There are no established campgrounds near Bald Mountain Wilderness, although dispersed camping is available along the access routes surrounding the area. From Willow Creek Ranch to the Ellison Creek Guard Station (from 9 miles to 12.5 miles from US 6) there are several dispersed camping sites in the scenic, well-watered Ellison Creek Canyon. From US 6 to the Ellison Creek Guard Station (approximatel 12.5 miles) the dirt road is well-graded and is suitable for most vehicles and trailers. The dirt roads are not maintained in the winter and could be impassable in heavy summer storms. Several additional dispersed camping areas along Forest Route 405, 12 miles south of Bald Mountain, have picnic tables. Backpacking and horse packing are the best ways to explore and enjoy this Wilderness. Water is not readily available in the rugged interior of the Wilderness, ensure you pack sufficient water for your needs. Please help preserve Nevada’s fragile environments, park your vehicle or set up camp in previously used sites, minimize impacts by practicing Leave No Trace ethics.

From Ely, NV, take US 6 southwest about 30 miles to County Road 10, turn right, west. After passing the Willow Grove Ranch property, 9 miles in, County Road 10 forms the south boundary of the Wilderness. Alternate route: From Ely, NV, take US 50 west about 45 miles to FS Road 400. Turn south and follow this dirt road about 20 miles to access the western flank of Bald Mountain and the Ellison Creek Guard Station.
