Area Description

The Mount Irish Wilderness is located in the Mount Irish Range of western Lincoln County approximately 10 miles west of Hiko, Nevada and 48 miles west of Caliente, Nevada. The area is managed entirely by the Ely District of the BLM and is part of a larger complex of Citizen Proposed Wilderness throughout the Mount Irish Range.

The Mount Irish Wilderness, one unit in the entire Mount Irish complex of wild lands, includes the steep and rugged 8,741-foot Mount Irish and a portion of its western foothills. The area is dominated by pinyon-juniper and provides mule deer habitat as well as desert bighorn sheep habitat on Mount Irish proper. The entire Mount Irish Wilderness complex is filled with cultural resources and provides a window back in time to prehistoric settlements. Today, visitors to the area can find solitude and scenic vistas on top of Mount Irish and among the canyons draining off the mountain. Recreational opportunities include excellent hiking, horseback riding, camping and hunting.

This wilderness is a component of the Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands.
