Grapevine Canyon Native Planting! (RSVPs Closed - Event at Capacity)

Join Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the National Park Service on Saturday, November 23rd for Grapevine Canyon Native Plant Restoration! (RSVPs Closed - Event at Capacity)

What: We will be planting 100+ native plants along the bench above the arroyo leading to Grapevine Canyon to help prevent erosion, restore natural habitat, and direct hikers towards a more sustainable route in the middle of the wash.  After we put the plants into the ground, we'll protect them from hungry critters by surrounding them with wire cages.

When and Where: We will meet at the Fiesta Henderson at 7:30am, carpool to Grapevine Canyon, and return to the Fiesta by 4:00pm.  During the project we'll also take time to eat lunch, explore the canyon, and marvel at the exquisite examples of petroglyphs that can be found in Grapevine Canyon.  Over 700 examples of petroglyphs are spread throughout the canyon!

Why and Who: Grapevine Canyon is an important place to the 'Aha Makhav, also known as the Mojave, who live in the area and who have called the Colorado River Basin their home since time immemorial.  The canyon itself is within Bridge Canyon Wilderness and Spirit Mountain Wilderness near Lake Mead National Recreation Area.  Spirit Mountain itself is a sacred place, known as Avi Kwa' Ame in the Mojave Language.  It is considered the center of creation among the 'Aha Makhav and other indigenous groups in the Colorado River Valley.  Grapevine Canyon is also an important place to the many different communities who call the Mojave Desert home.  Featuring many local animal and plant species - including its namesake grapes - Grapevine Canyon is a beloved hiking spot frequented by locals and visitors and a beautiful example of our Public Lands.  Show the area some love on Saturday, November 23!

What We'll Bring:  Tools, protective gear, water, snacks, and plants, plants, plants!

What You'll Bring:  We ask that you wear closed-toe shoes, long sleeves, and long pants.  You'll want a hat, sunscreen, or other sun protection - the days may be getting shorter, but the UV rays aren't.  A water bottle and lunch for yourself are definitely a must! Last, but not least, and perhaps most importantly, your dedication and smiling faces!  We are powered by Volunteers and can't do work like this without you!
