We moved this month's Wild Speaker Series to Thursday, May 20th, the day the Desert National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1936.

Join Friends for our May Wild Speaker Series, "A Glimpse Into the Desert Refuge" in an online Zoom presentation to celebrate 85 years of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge!  Just north of Las Vegas, the Desert Refuge is the largest refuge in the lower 48 states, and established for the preservation of habitat for Nevada's state mammal, the desert bighorn sheep.  Encompassing six major mountain ranges and nearly 1.6 million acres in Nevada, it provides the highest quality, intact habitat for desert bighorn sheep and other wildlife that depend on Great Basin and Mojave Desert ecosystems.

Kirk Peterson will lead us through a photo tour, telling us about places to visit and the incredible resources found throughout the Desert Refuge.  Kirk has 30 years of experience traveling and photographing Nevada’s wild lands and over the past several years he has been collecting data on Nevada's dark skies, assisting the Forest Service with Wilderness Character Monitoring, and acting as Friends of Nevada Wilderness' Wilderness Historian.

We'll also hear from Kevin DesRoberts, Project Leader for the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex, about management priorities and updates from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  Kevin has a wealth of knowledge about the plants and animals, management priorities, places to visit, and just about anything else you can think of!

Lastly, we'll have a Q&A session to answer all your questions about the Desert Refuge.  This will be an informative chat for the whole family!
