Area Description

This wilderness is a component of the Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands.

Pahute Peak Wilderness area is nestled within the arms of the Black Rock Desert Playas in the heart of the Black Rock Range. It has been described as being the "solar plexus" of the National Conservation Area and wilderness complex.

Climb to the top of Pahute Peak, or Big Mountain as it is also called, and experience being at the center of the world. From this 8,594 foot peak, visitors can see the all the other wilderness areas, the NCA, and get a sense of the distance the pioneers had to travel through this vast region along the Applegate-Lassen Historical Trail.

The higher-elevation ridge near Pahute Peak has large aspen and mountain mahogany stands and offers the hiker some beautiful scenery. The peak itself drops off quickly to the south. The west side of range is a jumble of interesting and colorful badlands-like rock formations. There are several excellent staging spots for exploration of this wilderness area for hunters, hikers, and rock hounds.

This wilderness is a component of the Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands.
