Summer has arrived! Come join us as we work on removing invasive weeds from the Mt. Rose Wilderness. Using shovels, we can most effectively reduce the population of Musk Thistle. Invasive weeds have many impacts on the native environment. From out-competing for resources to reducing water quality. The work is extremely rewarding and you get to experience some truly amazing country, all in our backyard Wilderness.

Once again, we'll be removing invasive weeds up the Hunter Creek Draining of the Mt. Rose Wilderness. We meet in the mornings at the Michael D. Thompson Trail head. We start each Weed Pull with a 2-3 mile hike and spend the cool hours of the day digging up Musk Thistle Rosettes. If you haven't experience Mt. Rose Wilderness, this is the perfect introduction. Join us for a great outing into our Public Lands and RSVP today!

This year we decided to monitor the invasive weed populations later in the summer. This will help us identify how many are slipping past the blades of our shovels and how this past winter affected populations.

Join us for a day of hiking on and off trail throughout the north portion of Mt. Rose Wilderness. We will hike to known weed locations and assess how they are doing. Hopefully, we won't find any new ones.

This is a great way to get a more in depth knowledge of Noxious Weeds and explore rarely seen areas of Mt. Rose Wilderness.

    Pine Forest Wilderness

    pineforrest_nypeak2_shaaron.jpg

At last we are headed back to the beautiful Pine Forest Wilderness. This will be our first trip there since it has become one of Nevada's newest wilderness areas. Located just Southeast of the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge, this area stands in juxtaposition to the surrounding desert. High granitic mountains, studded with, you guessed it, Pine trees! And Lakes. And amazing views of the surrounding desert!

    pineforest02_bbeffort.jpg

We plan to leave the office the afternoon of July 21st and spend the weekend camping. This will be a great trip to see lots of country as volunteers will have the opportunity to install boundary markers identifying the edge of the wilderness.

As usual, Friends of Nevada Wilderness will provide a decadent Dutch Oven Meal on the work day and breakfasts each morning, complete with hot coffee and tea and cocoa. Be sure to RSVP early and get in on this wonderful trip.
