Residents around Washoe County have been asking for a lands bill for Washoe County that is balanced and protects parks, open space, and wilderness. The Washoe County Commission will be holding a final open house for the Washoe public lands proposal. They want to hear your vision for the future of Washoe County.
Please join us on November 2nd and make your voice heard! Urge Washoe County and Nevada’s members of Congress to protect parks, trails, open space, and wilderness by passing a comprehensive lands bill for Washoe County.

Talking Points When Commenting at the Open House
- I strongly support the wilderness component of the public lands proposal and believe designating the six wilderness areas would permanently protect our quality of life in the area and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout the County.
- This is a great opportunity to resolve the Wilderness Study Area issue in the County and provide certainty to all stakeholders.
- Designating wilderness will protect the outdoor recreational and open space needs for the County in the face of increased growth and population pressures.
- Designating wilderness will also provide regulatory certainty for sage-grouse habitat in the future and will help Washoe County in the future with economic development for long-term mitigation, similar to desert tortoise mitigation in southern Nevada.
- In regards to the proposed public land transfers, I believe it is important that Washoe County honors County and City zoning and planning protocols and not allow for development in areas that cannot withstand said growth or are in direct contradiction to open space zoning.
- Washoe County should prioritize the preservation and expansion of parks, trails, open space and recreational opportunities around Reno, Sparks, and all of Washoe County.
- When commenting:
- Identify specific areas within the disposal boundary that are important to you – where you recreate (hike, camp, off-road vehicle use) – that should be preserved for conservation and recreation.
- If you’ve been to any of the proposed wilderness areas, state why you believe they are deserving of protection (wild qualities, wildlife present, etc.)
