Stand with Nevada, Stop Military Overreach

The Nevada State Legislature is stepping up to stop the military from taking more of our prized wildlands. Will you step up too?

Stand with Nevada, Stop Military Overreach

Background

Since 2016, Friends of Nevada Wilderness has been fighting to keep the military from closing off access to some of Nevada’s wildest lands. We’ve spent countless hours building grassroots support to save the Desert Refuge and the Stillwaters. We have turned out hundreds of advocates for hearings and held meetings with legislators from both sides of the aisle to make the case for conservation. Wildlife over Wargames! All this hard work has steadily built momentum for this important issue. More individuals and groups are stepping up and engaging and we are grateful and optimistic for their support! There is now broad bipartisan opposition to the military’s expansion plans. However, the battle is not yet won. We still need your help to get over the finish line to protect the Desert National Wildlife Refuge and the precious Stillwater Range.

Help us fight for your wild public lands. Donate Now.

A New Hope

In late February, both the State Assembly and State Senate introduced resolutions opposing the expansion of the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) any further into the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. On March 5th and 6th, Natural Resource Committee hearings were held for Senate Joint Resolution 3 (SJR3) and Assembly Joint Resolution 2 (AJR2). These meetings were filled with supporters from Friends, other conservation groups, and concerned citizens urging the State Legislature to pass these resolutions and show the U.S. Air Force that Nevada has already given enough public land to the military.

BREAKING NEWS: AJR2 has passed out of the Natural Resources Committee with unanimous support!

A similar resolution in the works to prevent the Fallon Naval Air Station from expanding further into our public lands. The military’s current plan would take 74,400 acres of Wilderness Study Areas which provide excellent wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation opportunities.

The Road to Success

We are putting 110% of our effort into helping SJR3 and AJR2 pass through the entire legislative process. These resolutions could make all the difference in keeping the expansion of the NTTR into the Desert Refuge from being approved by our legislators in Washington. We will also continue to work with state legislators to introduce a resolution opposing the expansion of the Fallon Naval Air Station. Keep an eye out for news on this front. At the national level, we will continue to work with Cassidy and Associates to lobby decision-makers in Congress, pushing to find a win-win solution for Nevadan’s, our public lands, and our troops.

Together We Can Win

As you might guess, butting heads with the military is both difficult and expensive. In order to succeed in stopping this military overreach and saving the wildlands you love, we need your financial support. Make a donation today and we will use it to assure that these lands stay wild and accessible forever.
