National Public Lands Day -- Santa Rosa Range
Start Date: 9/14/2012
End Date: 9/16/2012
Location: Santa Rosa Ranger District-Paradise Valley
State Region: Northwest Nevada
Event Type: Stewardship
We will pull barbed-wire fence in the Mullinix Creek area, Santa Rosa range, 1 hour north of Winnemucca. Volunteers will remove an old grazing fence from once-private land that is now managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
Volunteers will camp at the Paradise Valley Guard Station and on Saturday will shuttle up to the project site which is approximately 45 minutes via a rough two-track road from the guard station.
This is a FAMILY-FRIENDLY trip. Nevada Outdoor School will be on hand to provide a kids camp. Also, we may have an opportunity to collect native plant seeds to help the area recover from wildfires that have swept across northern Nevada.
In addition to the barbed-wire fence pull and seed collection, students from the Wildlife Society Club at UNR will receive training on range development monitoring. Any volunteer is welcome to participate in this training.
Carpooling is available from Reno, the group will be leaving from the Friends office no later than 2:30pm, Friday.
