REI digs in to help Desert National Wildlife Refuge
 Digging for wilderness |
REI employees rolled up their sleeves to restore the Desert
National Wildlife Refuge on Thursday, February 23. Joining Friends of Nevada Wilderness
staff and four interns from the Student Conservation Association, the team installed
167 feet of post-and-cable fence. The enclosure, measuring 1,800 square feet, encourages
camping in the impacted area. |
Working on the cable gang: getting a tight line
The volunteers dug 30 holes two feet into the rocky soil, then
installed natural juniper posts. And finished by stringing half-inch cable between the posts.
 Yea! Fence!

"We were all tired at the end of the day, and it made us feel
like we had done something" said Eric Larson with the REI crew. "Constructing something
with your own hands, and knowing that this place is better off is because of our work was a good feeling."
Eric also passed on some kind words about Friends of Nevada Wilderness:
"Working with Kurt [Friends Southern Nevada Director] makes everything simple. Because of
Friends working relationship with the [land-management] agencies, organizing this project
was a lot more streamlined for REI. Friends reputation precedes you so much, that we can
get out to do projects very effectively."
Thank you Eric, and THANK YOU REI for a job well done!

Pine Forest Range moves closer to wilderness designation
Pine Forest Range (c) Brian Beffort
March is a good month for Nevada's Wilderness as Congress has
scheduled both House and Senate Committee hearings for the Pine Forest Range
bill. The House Committee hearing was on March 8 and the Senate Committee hearing will
be on March 22. Since the Pine Forest Range bill has such strong support across the
board we expect the hearings to move forward smoothly. This process continues to be
a testimony for Nevadans working together to find common-sense agreements to protect
our wilderness.
If you have a moment, please call or write Representative Mark Amodei
to thank him for supporting the Pine Forest Range bill and for bringing the legislation
forward in the House of Representatives. He spoke very favorabily about the area and the
local process. Contact him here:
