Wilderness stewardship trips
Soldier Meadows stewardship trip, POSTPONED by BLM
The Bureau of Land Management has, again, postponed the planned
Soldier Meadows stewardship trip for reasons of “poor site conditions and projected
inclement weather.” Friends will re-post this trip if it is rescheduled for a
future date. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused our dedicated volunteers.

Spring Monitor Training, April 16-17
Friends is providing boots-on-the-ground support to the BLM
and Desert Research Institute, gathering baseline data on springs throughout the
Black Rock National Conservation Area. Spend the weekend with DRI professor Don Sada,
as we learn how to measure the health of desert springs. This will help the BLM make
the right management decisions to keep these springs resilient in the face of climate
change and other uncertainties.
DRI's Don Sada training volunteers (c) Brian Beffort
Youll return from this weekend armed with the skills and equipment
to venture out on your own (or with others) to monitor additional springs in the
future — a great opportunity to hike and explore while performing a valuable
service to the plants and wildlife of the Black Rock.
Well start at 9am Saturday at the Gerlach Community Center
for a few hours of classroom training, then head toward our camp at Soldier Meadows,
practicing our newly acquired skills at springs along the way.
Lunch Saturday will be provided by Friends of the Black
Rock-High Rock. Bring something to share for the Saturday night potluck at Soldier
Meadows. Friends of Nevada Wilderness will provide a continental breakfast on Sunday
morning. Please also bring your own snacks, drinks of choice, and lunch on Sunday.
To RSVP, call (775) 324-7667 or
