October 7, 2010
October 10 - 16 is National Refuge Week
National Wildlife Refuge Week is celebrated during the second
week of October. The national focus for 2010 is wilderness lands.
Friends of Nevada Wilderness is helping the Desert National
Wildlife Refuge celebrate refuge week. We expect to have so much fun that we are extending the
celebration through October and into November! Friends offers you three
opportunities to help the refuge by working on the Birdsong Trail.
Be a part of history — help build the Birdsong Trail.
This trail will enhance the birding experience of folk using the soon-to-be-built Visitor Center at
Corn Creek. The southern Nevada weather should be PERFECT for this series of Saturdays working for the wild.
Project info by date: October 23, October 30 and November 6.
You also can celebrate your Nevada national wildlife refuges any time of the
year just by visiting them and taking in the wild beauty, the solitude and the grand
wide-open spaces.

The Desert National Wildlife Refuge was established May 20, 1936,
for the protection, enhancement, and maintenance of the desert bighorn sheep. As the
largest (1.6 million acres) national wildlife refuge in the lower 48 states, it affords a big,
unfragmented area of desert bighorn sheep habitat — just 25 miles north of Las Vegas.

With six mountain ranges and diverse elevations, the refuge
is home to many plants and animals. The more than 500 known plant species provide
food and shelter for a wide range of birds, mammals and reptiles.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended much of the
Desert National Wildlife Refuge for wilderness designation. Friends hopes
that these wild places receive the full protection they deserve.
