December 1, 2009
The staff and board of Friends of Nevada Wilderness hope that
you will join with us in our celebrations in December. On December 2,
we recognize the birthdays of two people who have led the way for wildlands protection
across Nevada: Senator Harry Reid and Marge Sill, Mother of Nevada
Wilderness.
December 5,
marks the 20th anniversary of the Nevada Wilderness
Protection Act, which designated 13 wilderness areas on Forest Service managed
lands in Nevada.
Finally, on December 12, we celebrate wilderness and our
outstanding volunteers with a big "Wilderness Wingding" party, and you are invited.

Celebrating Forest Service Wilderness
December 5 is 20th anniversary of the law
On December 5, 1989, the Nevada Wilderness Protection Act was
signed into law. For four years in the late 1980s a dedicated group of volunteer
activists diligently worked to get permanent protection for Nevadas forest gems.
Some of the key people we all owe a big thanks to were Roger Scholl, Marge Sill,
Karen Boeger, Rose Strickland, Dennis Ghiglieri, Lois Sagel, Glenn Miller, Kirk
Peterson, Bert Young, and Ann & Greg Ebner. Sadly, a number of the key folks are
no longer with us including Jean Ford, Catherine Smith, Amy Scholl, and Sally Kabish.
Of course there were many more that helped make this dream a reality.
The result of their efforts was wilderness designation for
the following wilderness areas totaling 733,400 acres: Alta Toquima, Arc Dome,
Boundary Peak, Currant Mountain, East Humboldt, Grant Range, Mount Charleston,
Mount Moriah, Mount Rose, Quinn Canyon, Ruby Mountains, Santa Rosa, Table Mountain,
and an expansion of Jarbidge Wilderness.
