"Voice Your Choice" at Patagonia
Your chance to help Friends get grant money
Patagonia nominated Friends of Nevada Wilderness along with
two other local groups for the "Voice Your Choice" award. Put Patagonias money
where your mouth is! Cast your ballot in the Voice Your Choice campaign to help
Patagonias Reno store decide how it should distribute $5,000 in grant money to
three local environmental organizations.
The top vote-getter will be awarded $2,500, with second- and
third-places receiving $1,500 and $1,000. Votes will be accepted at the store
September 24 through October 24. Participants can cast one vote
per store per visit. While no purchase is necessary, we encourage you to shop while
you vote for Friends of Nevada Wilderness.
On October 17th, Friends of Nevada Wilderness will be
tabling at Patagonia's Reno outlet — 8550 White Fir Street; so,
come in and say hello. Winners will be announced in early November.

National Public Lands Day
on the Black Rock Desert
Volunteers have grand time in the desert
About 100 volunteers gathered in the Black Rock Desert for
National Public Lands Day, September 18-21. Several work parties continued fencing
and reseeding in the Coyote Dunes complex helping to repair damage from off-road
vehicles. Others worked to prevent vehicle trespass on Steamboat Rock, and another group
picked up litter at the High Dry Playas.
Along with Friends of Nevada Wilderness and BLM, the Nevada
Outdoor School, Desert Survivors, and Friends of Black Rock also participated in
this large event. A special thanks goes out to the great families from the Mountain
View Montessori School.
Saturday night, volunteers enjoyed a potluck with some fine Dutch oven cooking and
telescope star gazing.
We all wish Dave and Stephanie LaFevre (BLM and Nevada
Outdoor School) best wishes with their new jobs in California. We will all miss
them and what they have done for the Black Rock!

Cave Springs project review
Volunteers help Mt Charleston Wilderness, Toiyabe National Forest
On Friday September 18, six volunteers hiked up the 2½
miles through Trail Canyon to beautiful Cave Springs. The air was cool and the
early fall colors were hinting at the change of season. Once there, volunteers
naturalized user-created routes, packed out old pipe and removed campfire rings.
Folks had been camping too close to the springs, making it hard for wildlife to
get a drink. Afterwards, the volunteers said they had fun and felt they had made
a positive difference for the wildlife that calls the Mt Charleston Wilderness home.

Fletcher Canyon graffiti removal success
Volunteers clean up at Mt Charleston Wilderness
Beautiful Fletcher Canyon in the Mt. Charleston Wilderness
was recently marred by vandals who painted black and white graffiti on canyon walls.
With spray bottles of graffiti remover and a lot of elbow grease, three volunteers
working with Friends of Nevada Wilderness removed this blight from the canyon on
September 16th.
