On Friday, September 26, 2008, Congresswoman Berkley
introduced the Gold Butte National Conservation Area Act. This act would create
the Gold Butte National Conservation Area and designate 13 wilderness areas on
lands managed by the BLM and by the Park Service in the Lake Mead NRA.

Public Lands Day Events cap off a great season of Stewardship
Over the past two weekends (September 20 and 27), volunteers have turned out with
Friends of Nevada Wilderness to celebrate and give back to our public lands.
Last weekend in the Mt. Rose Wilderness, Friends and
volunteers teamed up with the US Forest Service and the Hills Angels 4x4 club to build
a rock barrier to protect a population of the endangered Galena Creek rock cress
(native only to the Carson Range) from vehicle traffic along Garson Road. Volunteers
also repaired a motorized trespass in another area within the wilderness.
On the weekend of September 20, more than 80 volunteers
joined forces in the Pahute Peak Wilderness in the Black Rock Desert. Our biggest
volunteer event of the year helped rid the wilderness of mining garbage left over
from the 1970s. It also included great hikes, a Dutch oven potluck dinner, and the
electric beauty of a lightning storm on Friday night.
These two events capped off a great season for Friends
Wilderness Stewardship program. So far this year, more than 300 volunteers
participated in 30 projects across the Silver State, working for more than 6,533
hours worth $127,458 in service to Nevadas wild public lands.
Thanks to everyone who supported this program this year!
Nevada is now a better place because of you.

website or give us a call to find
out more and to learn about other opportunities.
Arc Dome Wilderness — Restoration Trip
Start Date: 10/17/2008
End Date: 10/20/2008
Location: Arc Dome Wilderness.
Join Friends of Nevada Wilderness on a backpacking trip in the Arc Dome Wilderness Area.
Our goal is to collect baseline data for future projects on the Toiyabe Crest Trail.
We will access the trail from the North Twin Trailhead.
Some backpacking experience and personal gear required.
The aspens should be blazing in all their glory, and this
could be your last opportunity to do some hiking before the snows fall.
