Area Description

If designated, the additions proposed for the Ruby Mountains Wilderness would provide contiguous protected wildlife habitat for species such as Rocky Mountain bighorn, American pika and greater sage grouse.

Ruby Mountains Additions are comprised of several separate areas contiguous with existing wilderness. The additions would increase the size of the protected area by 24,551. The proposed additions include:
Ruby Mountains - Cold Creek (03-19)  —  2,334 acres
Ruby Mountains - Secret Peak South (03-18A)  —  1,430 acres
Ruby Mountains - Seitz (03-21C)  —  11,408 acres
Ruby Mountains - Talbout (03-21A)  —  5,795 acres
Ruby Mountains - Thomas (03-21B)  —  3,584 acres

Because these proposed additions are contiguous with and would be incorporated into existing wilderness, any of the individual areas can be smaller than the usual 5,000 acre minimum for independent wilderness areas.
