Petersen Mountain Hike

Come enjoy panoramic views from the high point (7841') of the Petersen Mountain Range that straddles the California-Nevada border just north of Reno.

Distance & Elevation: Approximately 6 mi and 2300 ft
Difficulty: Moderately strenuous
When: Saturday, Feb 7
Meeting Place: Costco (Harvard Way) parking lot, NW corner
Time: Ready to leave by 8:00 AM
Driving Time: ~45 min each way
Driving difficulty: Moderately difficult, high clearance 4WD; road is likely to be muddy

Other info: The Carson City District of the BLM is currently accepting comments on their Resource Management Plan (RMP) and their “preferred alternative” includes many areas that meet “Lands with Wilderness Characteristics” (LWC) criteria. However, Petersen Mountain was not included. During this hike, we will discuss the RMP and how you can help Petersen Mountain to be included in the BLM plan.

Despite beautiful hiking weather for the past several weeks, it appears that a major storm is heading our way this weekend. As of Monday, the NOAA forecast for the area on Friday night is “a chance of rain and snow” and on Saturday, "A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Breezy.”
Regardless of the dismal forecast, we plan to go rain or shine. If you go, please be prepared for the weather.
Please let the hike lead, Larry Dwyer, know for sure if you plan to join us and if you can drive or will be needing a ride. He will try to connect riders and drivers prior to Saturday.
