Reno is one of the few cities in the United States lucky enough to have designated wilderness within a mile of the city limit. Mount Rose is a major recreational year-round destination, providing abundant opportunities for skiing, hiking and exploring for residents and visitors alike. It provides important habitat for wildlife and beautiful views for the those in the Truckee Meadows and the Tahoe basin. Mt. Rose's living landscape is also Mother Nature's water filter, providing crisp, clear snowmelt to Tahoe and the Truckee Meadows.
In order to maximize the quality of life and tourist economy that Mt. Rose supports, Friends believes the Mt. Rose wilderness boundaries need to be expanded to protect the mountain's critical wildlife habitat, beautiful views, open space and recreational opportunities. However, expanded boundaries need to be consistent with the needs of the communities that surround Mt. Rose and the Forest Service, who manages it.
Currently, there are no final, proposed boundaries for an expanded Mt. Rose Wilderness. Friends looks forward to working with interested citizens, groups and stakeholders in order to come up with boundaries that make sense and that will best serve residents and visitors to the area today, and for generations to come.
