Jarbidge Wilderness Trip

What: Multi-day trip to climb Matterhorn Peak (10,838’), Cougar Peak (10,559’) and Gods Pocket Peak (10,185’).

Distance & Elevation gains:  Matterhorn and Cougar ~10 mi, 4600’  Gods Pocket ~12 mi, 3500’
Tentative Itinerary:
Monday, July 20: Leave Reno 9:00 AM and drive to Jarbidge, camp at NF campground
Tuesday, July 21: Climb Matterhorn and Cougar, then return to campground. This will be a long and strenuous day with some class 2-3 rock scrambling near the top so we’ll start hiking by 6:00 AM or earlier. We’ll start walking along the Jarbidge Canyon road (of “bucket brigade” and “sagebrush rebellion” fame) then head steeply up cross country to a saddle between the peaks.
Wednesday, July 22: Relax and explore the town of Jarbidge, then drive (2-3 hr) to Gods Pocket TH and camp.
Thursday, July 23: Climb Gods Pocket Peak. Partly trail, then cross country with some exposure near the top.
Friday, July 24: Drive back to Reno (there may be a drive up P2K on the way back)
Difficulty: Strenuous
Trip size limit: 12 people
Dogs?: No
WhenMonday, July 20 through Friday, July 24
Meeting Place: TBD
Time9:00 AM
Driving Time: ~8-9 hr to Jarbidge
Driving difficulty: Some easy dirt roads into Jarbidge. Gods Pocket TH will likely require high clearance 4WD.

Other info: Participants will be expected to provide their own food for the trip. There is a restaurant (with yummy pies!) in Jarbidge. There are also places to stay (other than camping) in Jarbidge such as: www.JarbidgeCanyonRetreatCenter.com (no recommendation, they just sent me some info).

Long range weather forecast: We need to assume the possibility/probability of afternoon thunderstorms.
Please let the trip leader know as soon as possible if you plan to join.
