The Bonanza Extravaganza - 10/31/09
October 31: Calling all southland wilderness stewardship volunteers
Help us celebrate Nevada Day in southern Nevada in "Wild Style"
by volunteering for the Bonanza Trail Head Project. This stewardship project site
is located in the wild and beautiful Spring Mountains, just a few miles outside Las Vegas.
Friends of Nevada Wilderness and our stewardship partner, the
US Forest Service, will do some much-needed work at the trailhead. We will work on
signs and permit boxes, remove graffiti, and perform routine trail maintenance on sections
of the lower Bonanza trail. Please come out to make a difference for your public lands
and celebrate the Silver State's birthday at the same time.
Call Kurt Kuznicki at (775) 745-3119 for more info and to sign
up for this volunteer day trip.

Volunteers help the Pahranagat NWR
October 17: Friends' volunteers celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week
by working to improve the Pahranagat Refuge.
I have been on a number of great projects with some wonderful
people since I've been in southern Nevada. I have to say the National Wildlife Refuge
Week at Pahranagat was very special because of the diversity of the volunteers.
Justice Rwechungura, a naturalized US citizen who leads tours
to his native Tanzania and other places in Africa, has seen wilderness disappear is
his county and wants to leave a Wilderness Legacy in his new home in southern Nevada.
"What does it say about us as a people if we use up the wild places and don't save
anything for the future?" said Justice, speaking from his heart.
His wife Zighe, who hails from Kenya, joined us on the trip
and shared Justice's concerns. Geneva Student is an uber southern Nevada public lands
volunteer, and she expressed her concern by telling us about the wildlife that is
threatened in her native Panama. Their plight inspired her to work hard for wildlife
and wild places in Nevada.
Of course the good, old US of A was well represented by local
conservationists and concerned citizens like John Bialecki, and John & Hermi Hiatt.
Standing up for the future was young Hannah Spears who came out to help her dad,
Jonathan, with the hope of popping a few cattails and seeing some wildlife at the refuge.
It was great day that touched my heart in many ways and made
me realize, once again, that not only is Nevada wilderness a special gift from the
past but it is a gift that must be passed on to the future.
Sending out a big "thank you" to all who participated in this
great day for Nevada's wild places,
Kurt Kuznicki
