Senator Harry Reid and Congressman Joe Heck,
Thank you for your efforts to remove language in the National Defense Authorization Act that would have transferred jurisdiction of more than half of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge over to the United States Air Force. If not for your efforts, the passage of this language would have threatened critical bighorn sheep habitat.
As you know, the Desert National Wildlife Refuge is the largest refuge in the contiguous United States. Encompassing six major mountain ranges and nearly 1.6 million acres in Nevada, it provides the highest quality, intact habitat for desert bighorn sheep and other wildlife that depend on Great Basin and Mojave Desert ecosystems. Your efforts have allowed this critical habitat to remain intact.
Thank you for listening to local Nevada residents who asked Congress to keep jurisdiction over the Desert National Wildlife Refuge in the U.S Fish and Wildlife's hands.
