Take Action - Help Keep Washoe Wild
ACTION NEEDED: If you live in Washoe County, please
write the Washoe
County Commission AND the Reno or Sparks City Councils if you
live within the city boundaries today.
Addresses are to the right and talking points are below.
Background: We are blessed with an
abundance of open space in Washoe County from forested areas in
the Sierra Nevada to the desert playa of the Black Rock Desert
with much more in between but many of our most valued areas near
Reno and Sparks especially are at risk due to community
expansion and the resulting impacts from new development (2-3%
population increase annually). Washoe County is updating their
Open Space Plan for the southern part of the county and will be
asking for County Commission approval in early 2008. It is
critical for citizens like you to be involved to keep these wild
open spaces from being developed.
Talking Points for your Own Letter
If you have a favorite wild open space in
southern Washoe County please talk about it and why it is
important to you.
-
These open places help our air and
water quality
-
Wild places are critical for our
wildlife especially deer.
-
Our quality of life will be
diminished if we lose these places that make the region so
special.
-
I like to (hike, camp, dog walk,
bike, bird watch…) our Washoe County open spaces
-
These open spaces are important for
our city’s viewshed. Growth need to be focused to the urban
core and not 30 miles from town Mention these unprotected
wild Washoe gems:
-
The
Virginia Mountains
out by Pyramid Lake
-
The
Peterson Mountains
out by the Cold Springs Development near Bordertown
-
The
PahRah Mountains
out by the wild horse facility east of the Pyramid Highway
-
The
Dogskin Mountains
