Take Action - Save Nevada's Wild Forests
ACTION NEEDED: Please write the Humboldt-Toiyabe
National Forest today. Addresses and sample letters and
talking points are to the right.
Background: With 6.2 million acres
of mountains and forests in Nevada and California’s eastern
Sierra Nevada, the Humboldt-Toiyabe (HT) National Forest is the
largest forest in the Lower 48. Wilderness areas like Jarbidge,
Mt. Charleston, Arc Dome and the Ruby Mountains provide beauty,
clean water and air, wildlife habitat and myriad opportunities
to hike, backpack, backcountry ski, fish, watch wildlife and
breathe solitude deep into your soul.
Our goal is to encourage the Forest
Service to protect and conserve all their remaining wilderness
quality lands through their forest plan. Without the Forest
Service recognizing the wilderness values of the land, our wild
areas could be open to mining, oil & gas development, off-road
vehicles and other threats. Until Congress considers these lands
for wilderness, the Forest Service needs to protect our
remaining wilderness resource.
Talking Points for your Own Letter:
-
If you have a favorite area you
enjoy, please mention it.
-
Thank FS for the big job of looking
at all their roadless areas for wilderness consideration and
for having information available on their website
-
All FS areas with high wilderness
values should be recommended for wilderness.
-
There are wilderness quality lands
that need to be added to existing wilderness areas.
-
Don’t eliminate areas from wilderness
consideration because they may have mineral potential. There
are plenty of areas where mining is feasible; let’s not use
our most treasured and scenic lands for it.
-
Illegal and user-created routes
(two-tracks) should not remove an area from consideration as
wilderness. These impacts can be healed and repaired.
Unprotected wild gems include the
following:
The Toiyabe Crest. Adjacent to the
Arc Dome wilderness, this 100,000-acre roadless area is home to
the Toiyabe Crest National Recreation Trail and helps make up a
250,000-acre wildland complex for water, wildlife, recreation
and solitude.
Pearl Peak. These 60,000 acres of
wild mountains south of the Ruby Mountains Wilderness are home
to bighorn sheep and ancient bristlecone pines. This area offers
bountiful hiking and backcountry skiing.
Job’s Peak. This 21,000-acre
roadless area straddles the California-Nevada state line between
Lake Tahoe and Nevada’s Carson Valley; home to beautiful views,
recreational opportunities, wildlife habitat and intact
watersheds in one of the most-visited regions in the country.
Wilderness additions. Many
existing wilderness areas are small because much of the wild
land was left out of previous wilderness legislation. Now is the
time to expand them and protect the rest of the area. These
wilderness additions will significantly enhance Nevada’s wild
legacy for people and wildlife.
